April 11, 2022 – STAFFORD, Texas – The Spartan boys from Stafford High School Varsity team made history over the weekend and the team is all smiles as the Region 3-4A champions.
Head Coach Ruben Perez has led the program for nearly a decade since 2013. He coached the team to the Regional Semifinals in 2016, 2018, 2019 and this year made it the fourth run for the program. On Saturday, April 9, the Spartans clinched victory vs. Salado Eagles 4-3 after back-to-back games. As they celebrated on the field, the players enjoyed a familiar sports tradition and dumped a cooler on “Coach P”.
Coach Perez described the win, “It’s the best feeling in the world. We’ve been to the Regional Tournament before and it’s familiar territory, but it’s incredible to finally breakthrough. There’s nothing like it.” He is grateful for all the support from Assistant Coaches Abel Maldonado and Luis Gallegos as well as the involvement of Stafford MSD families, staff and community.
During the Regional Tournament, sophomore Jonathan Rivas scored 3 goals, senior Mohammad Rahmati and senior Daniel Torres scored 2 goals each. In the Regional Finals, sophomore goalkeeper Ivan Maldonado won “Man of the Match”.
The Stafford Spartans will play against the Boerne Greyhounds on Wednesday, April 13 at 4:00 p.m. at the Georgetown ISD Stadium.
