As SMSD looks forward to a busy, fun-filled summer, we are anxiously preparing for the 2013-2014 school year. Reminded by novelist, Scott Corbett, reading provides “a chance to live an extra life”, and by author, William Safire, reading “will improve your writing or at least tickle your thinking”, we would like to challenge SMSD students to foster an appreciation for reading throughout the summer. With the hope of inspiring our students to become active, life-long readers SMSD has implemented a summer reading program.
This program is designed to offer a plethora of reading selection choices, while challenging students to:
· embrace positive learning experiences
· broaden their vocabulary
· enhance their comprehension level
· increase their reading efficiency and productivity levels
You will find a list of suggested summer reading materials below. (Please note the grade level is based on your student’s 2013-2014 grade level). These materials are available for purchase at:
· Half-Price Books - Sugar Land location
· Barnes and Noble - Town Center
During the first six weeks of the 2013-2014 school year, your student’s ELA/Reading teacher will provide a formative assessment which will cover the student’s reading selection(s). Assessments of summer independent reading will occur in various ways (i.e. book report, accelerated reading assessment, formative evaluation, etc.) Detailed information regarding the specific grade level summer reading program is located on each campus’ website.
Have a safe and happy summer and remember, “The more you read, the more you’ll know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” (Dr. Seuss)
