Observation Hours



The following instructions apply to individuals who must complete observation hours in order to satisfy college course requirements or criteria for an Alternative Certification Program (ACP.)

ALL items must be completed and returned with requested documentation to be considered for campus placement.

3.  Things to Know:

  • Observation hour requests are accepted at the beginning of each semester.
  •  First semester observations begin after the third week in September and end the last week of November.
  • Second Semester observations begin the third week in January and end the last week of March.
  • SMSD will not approve more than 30 hours per semester per student and is limited to the number of observers per campus. Placements are on a first come first serve basis for those who have provided all the requested information.
  • Submitting all requirements is the responsibility of the observer.
  • Observations are not scheduled during summer school.
  • You will be contacted by the Human Resources department within 3 to 5 business days via email.



  • Respect the campus’ decision of classroom and teacher observation placement.
  • You are ONLY granted access to your assigned campus; You will NOT visit unauthorized campuses.

  • Provide the campus with your driver’s license and university identification during each observation visit.

  • Follow campus’ check in procedure.

  • ALL cell phone use for ANY purpose during observation is prohibited; no pictures are allowed, no exceptions.

  • Professional dress is required for all observers. Admittance to campus may be denied if attire is deemed inappropriate by an administrator.

  • Remember that all information concerning students is confidential.

  • You may not observe in your child’s classroom.

  • Be respectful of the campus’ ultimate purpose, educating the students that attend the campus and serving the needs of those families. Assisting with observations is not a focus or their main goal.

  • Please be courteous and professional to the faculty and staff assisting you in completing your observation hours.

  • Approved observation time frames are by semester and do not extend into another semester.

  • The campus administrator has the authority to deny or discontinue requests for observation hours.
