"I believe Stafford prepared me academically for Rice," Montgomery said. "It also prepared me athletically."

Montgomery, a sophomore at Rice University, is studying Sport Management with plans to add a Business minor.

"Rice is going to get the best out of you, on and off the field," Montgomery said.

Montgomery played running back on the Spartans' 2016 Class 4A State Quarterfinal Team -- the best team in program history. He was one of three Division I Football Players from that team, along with wide receiver Hezekiah Jones (Texas A&M) and defensive back Jalen Pitre (Baylor). All three played as true freshmen last season.

In May 2016, Montgomery won the 100 Meter State Championship to lead Stafford to the 2016 Class 4A State Track & Field Championship.

At Rice, he's made the transition from running back to slot receiver this off season. Last year, he rushed for 72 yards as a true freshman, beginning his college career with a game in Australia against nationally-ranked Stanford.

The Owls open the 2018 season under first-year head coach Mike Bloomgren on Aug. 25 vs. Prairie View A&M.

"The new coaching staff is getting us ready, mentally and physically, for the season," Montgomery said. "They are intense and want to get the best out of us every day."
